Smartphone Sales Outsell Feature Phones for the First Time

The smartphone market continues to grow, producing 420 million handsets in Q1 2013, marking 4% growth year over year. In addition, the industry outshipped feature phones for the first time ever, garnering 51.6% of the market, though The Verge notes how nebulously the industry defines “smartphone.” Samsung continued to have the largest share of smartphone shipments, totaling 32.7%, doubling Apple’s second-place share of 17.3%. While both companies grew in total shipments, Apple actually lost share of the entire market, going from 23% to 17.3%, while Samsung went from 28.8% to 32.7% year over year.
