PC Sales to Drop 10% in 2013

Gartner predicts that worldwide shipments of PCs will decline by 10.6% in 2013 to 305 million units. However, worldwide device sales of tablets, PCs, and smartphones combined are expected to rise 5.9% for the year to 2.35 billion units, driven by modest growth in mobile phones (4.3% to 1.8 billion units) and strong growth in tablets (67.9% to 202 million units). Gartner’s data includes a product category called ultramobiles, defined as ‘thin and light clamshell designs, and slate and hybrid devices running Windows 8’ (such as Chromebook). This category is small, but is expected to grow by 107% for the year to two-hundred thousand units.  The decline of PCs coupled with the high growth of tablets demonstrates the value consumers place on mobility and ‘anytime-anywhere computing.’
