Mobile Ad Revenue Jumps 83% In 2012

According to the IAB and IHS, mobile advertising grew a massive 82.8% from $5.3 billion in 2011 to $8.9 billion in 2012. Search continues to dominate mobile advertising, representing 52.8% of total mobile ad revenue. Display ads accounted for 38.7%, and the remaining 8.5% was messaging (SMS and MMS). All regions saw significant growth, with North America seeing the greatest jump with 111% growth from 2011. The other regions grew as follows:

Western Europe: 91%
Latin America: 71%
Central Europe: 69%
Middle-East and Africa: 68%
Asia-Pacific: 60%

The IHS cites the following factors for the increases in mobile advertising revenue: rising smartphone adoption along with 3G/4G penetration, more time spent on mobile devices, and better monetization of advertising. The data help reiterate that mobile is coming into its own as an advertising medium, while desktop ad spending is expected to peak in 2014 in the US.
