According a survey of IT decision makers (ITDMs) from China, India, Brazil, Germany, the US, and the UK, the Internet of Things (IoT) will be as transformative as any technology since the birth of the Internet. The number of ‘things’ connected to the internet is expected to reach 50 billion by 2020, and with that comes a tremendous opportunity to utilize the myriad data created for both businesses and consumers. 30 percent of the respondents believe that the most beneficial outcome of the Internet of Things would be smart cities be, which would entail cities capable of collecting and analyzing large amounts of data from connected devices, and citizens’ social media activity in real time to improve urban life. The majority of respondents also saw a great potential for IoT in improving business insights, efficiency, productivity, collaboration, and the ability to respond to real-time events. An average of 70 percent of IDTMs in the six countries surveyed agreed that companies that do not implement IoT technologies will fall behind their competitors, highlighting the opportunities to gain insight into their business, and enabling their businesses to respond to real world events.
